Hospices from across the country come together at St Helena Hospice to explore collaboration

The forum – A Winning Combination: hospices working together – was all about collaboration and welcomed hospices from across the country to St Helena Hospice’s Education and Research Centre in Colchester.

The idea behind the interactive day came from St Helena Hospice’s fundraising lottery, Your Hospice Lottery. Alex Howe, Head of Lottery, explains:

“Your Hospice Lottery is owned and run by St Helena Hospice and also raises money for seven other hospices across the country. By working together we can keep set up and administrative costs to a minimum so more money can be spent on looking after our respective patients and their families.

“Your Hospice Lottery has raised a total of £6.4 million for hospice care so far – but the partnership goes beyond that. Being placed in such a central position means we have been able to help our hospice partners share experiences and ideas, and this forum is an extension of that.

“The forum was a wonderful opportunity to showcase how the hospice world does actually work together rather than compete with each other.

“We all understand the value of strengthening relationships within the hospice world, learning from each other, exploring innovative ideas and sharing our stories, all with the ultimate aim to give our patients the best care possible.”

Elizabeth Palfreman, National Hospice Support Manager, Hospice UK, gave a presentation on income growth through collaboration. She said: “By working together in collaboration hospices can make the cake bigger for us all to share. If we continue to work in isolation we end up competing for the same, small cake. One of the great strengths of hospice care is that we are always happy to share ideas and best practice, yet sometimes we shy away from collaborating or giving something up in order to gain something you cannot achieve on your own.”

Mark Jarman-Howe, Chief Executive, St Helena Hospice presented on ‘insight into the commissioning collaboration’; Dr Lynn Morgan, Chief Executive Arthur Rank Hospice Charity shared her experiences of the journey of building a new hospice; and Jenni Anderson, Director of Income Generation at Haven House Children’s Hospice talked about the challenges in income generation.

Delegates took part in an interactive workshop to give the hospices a chance to really work together on a task to present to St Helena Hospice judges Mark Jarman-Howe, Chief Executive, and Karen Chumbley, Clinical Director, an innovative idea for income generation which could benefit from collaboration.
