Jane gives the gift of time
Inspired by the care provided for her mother-in-law Kathleen, Jane Jones always felt like she wanted to give something back to John Taylor Hospice.
So instead of gifting money she decided to give the gift of time by joining the hospice as a volunteer.
Jane’s mother-in-law Kathleen Jones, originally from Donegal, spent a month at the Birmingham-based hospice in 1994 and was 74 when she died of kidney cancer.
Talking of the care that her family experienced, mum-of-three Jane said: “She couldn’t have been in a better place. The staff were incredible and they supported us all through an extremely difficult time. They were so compassionate and caring and nothing was too much trouble.
“Our sons were very young at the time: 11, nine and five-years-old. The hospice was calm and peaceful and the staff were so incredible that our boys were never scared. They were given the chance to create very special memories which they cherish.”
Jane, aged 65, lives in Great Barr with her husband of 38 years Kenneth. Volunteering was something she had always planned to do during her retirement, so when a leaflet from John Taylor Hospice dropped through her door in 2012, Jane believes it was ‘meant to be’.
“The leaflet said that volunteers were needed so I called them up and they invited me in for a chat,” explained Jane. “I said to them I didn’t know what skills I had to offer but they made me realise I had so much to give such as kindness, support and friendship.”
Jane signed up to join the hospice’s team of volunteers four years ago and currently gives her time as a host at a specialist breathing clinic once a week.
“I love meeting people and getting to know them,” said Jane. “I meet some wonderful people and get see first-hand what a difference the FAB programme makes.
“I see people form strong friendships and learn little things that make a big difference to their lives. The hospice is still as lovely as it was 22 years ago when my treasured mother-in-law was being cared for. I’m so grateful and proud to be a part of the John Taylor family.”
