John Taylor Hospice in the running for community care award

Staff from John Taylor Hospice have been shortlisted as finalists in the Community Foundation Community Inspiration Awards.

The hospice’s Community Team has been recognised in the Health and Well-Being category of the Birmingham-wide awards.

Recognising outstanding contributions made by staff from public sector organisations and members of the community whose efforts have made a positive difference in the community and have inspired and motivated others, the awards receive hundreds of nominations each year.

Now in their seventh year, the prizes will be presented at a ceremony and dinner at the Al Miraj Banqueting Suite in Small Heath on 25 July.

The hospice’s community team is made up of clinical nurse specialists, Hospice at Home nurses and palliative care assistants, pharmacists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and a patient and family support worker. The community service is also supported by the hospice’s Well-Being Team.

John Taylor Hospice CEO Penny Venables said: “We are delighted that the work we are doing supporting people in their homes has been recognised in this way.

“By providing practical and nursing support, by offering services which promote independence and by being a listening ear when it’s needed, our Community Team is enabling people with a terminal condition to remain at home and, if it is their wish, to die at home.

“Two-thirds of people say they would prefer to die at home and yet we know that nationally around half actually die in hospital. We are changing that. Our Community Team supports the majority of people it cares for to die in dignity at home with their families at the bedside.”
