70 year old to trek 70km for Arthur Rank Hospice!
Ken Smith, from Bar Hill was the 20th person to sign up to next year’s Team ARHC Sahara Challenge last week and has pledged to raise money for the hospice in memory of his wife Lydia.
Ken joins 19 other trekkers on the once in a lifetime journey which sees them walk across the world’s largest desert; a mixture of sand dunes and rocky terrain, facing high temperatures of up to 40’c during the day and as low as 0’c at night under the stars, led by camels and Berber guides. The group have already started vigorous training sessions to prepare for the challenge and have a number of fundraising events under their belt with many more in the pipeline, including Disco’s, quizzes and village fetes. Team ARHC will then jet to Marrakech on 15 March 2018, spend a day travelling to their start point before trekking for three days and 2 half days.
Ken has supported the charity for many years after his wife Lydia was cared for at the Mill Road site back in 2008. He says “I will forever be thankful for the care the nurses at the hospice gave Lydia in her final days. I originally heard about the challenge at the Light Up A Life service last year. After taking a few months to think it through, I decided: why not? My doctor says I am fit as a fiddle and who knows if I will get a chance to do something like this again? More importantly, it’s a chance for me to give something back to ARHC.”
There’s still time join this adventure of a lifetime; pay a deposit of £275 and raise a minimum sponsorship of £1,690 (or there is a self-fund option available). Get in touch with Amy in the fundraising office on 01223 675883 or visit http://www.arhc.org.uk/hospicesaharatrek.asp for more details.
