A new look for Myland Hall terrace

Work has been completed to resurface the terrace outside the Inpatient Unit, making it safer and simpler for patients to move from their rooms into the hospice garden.

The old slab paving was in urgent need of repair, but thanks to work funded by construction industry charity CRASH, patients and families will be able to enjoy the garden at Myland Hall in safety for many years to come.

Speaking at the official opening of the terrace hospice Chief Executive Mark Jarman-Howe said: “It’s great to have the support of CRASH to transform the terrace. It’s made a massive difference to an area that is used by 300 patients and their families each year. It’s also great to have had the support of a number of local businesses.”

Karen Causton, Head of the Inpatient Unit (IPU) said: “The gorgeous gardens so wonderfully maintained by volunteers has always been used as an extension to the IPU. Thanks to CRASH we have a lovely new terrace which can be accessed more safely and smoothly by patients on beds so that they can enjoy being outside in the garden with their family and friends. The old terrace was very bumpy so it was difficult for wheelchair users to access. Now it is a lovely smooth surface that is safe for all to use and enjoy.”

St Helena Hospice is grateful to construction industry CRASH and their patrons, including A Plant of Colchester and Forterra for assisting with the cost of the work both financially and through the donation of materials.

CRASH helps homeless and hospice charities with construction related projects offering professional expertise, obtaining building materials and awarding cash grants.

Francesca Robert, Chief Executive of CRASH said, “It’s an honour to have been able to help St Helena Hospice. I hope that everyone can really enjoy the terrace and the beautiful gardens. We’re very pleased to have been able to do our own small bit to help.”
