After a successful inaugural Chelmsford Marathon in 2014 with over 1,000 runners taking part, The J’s Hospice is bringing it back for this year with a brand new single lapped Marathon course encompassing the City of Chelmsford.

After listening to runners' feedback The J’s Hospice enlisted the help of local running club Springfield Striders to create a brand new course by runners for runners.

Kevin Wright, 61, the Club Chairman, said:

'When The J’s Hospice approached us after last year’s Marathon we were delighted to get involved.

'Although the race had been a huge success we felt we could make the course better for the runners, help alleviate the traffic problems in Writtle and avoid too many clashes with cyclists and pedestrians.

'The new start in front of Shire Hall allows us to thin out the field before returning to Central Park at the three mile point and also give the feel of a ‘City’ Marathon as it unfolds through the streets of Chelmsford.

'The course then proceeds on cycleways and minor roads through Writtle Agricultural College and then on to Roxwell and Willingale (well it was good enough for the Tour de France so why not us?). The return is made on different lanes until retracing through the College and finishing in Central Park.

'There are some inclines, but nothing could claim to be a hill, on what is a beautiful scenic course through the Essex countryside. The lack of spectators on the countryside loop will be compensated for by the Striders’ marshals who are well known for their encouraging and often raucous support. The crowds should increase again as the race heads back to the city centre for the big finish.

'With The J’s proven ‘big event’ organisational skills and the Springfield Striders’ road race expertise (our Pleshey Half Marathon was voted best Essex Road Race in 2014) it should all combine to make a memorable day.'

This event will raise much-needed funds for The J’s Hospice and their young adult patients as well as creating a lasting legacy for the City of Chelmsford of a successful marathon that can grow year on year, bringing visitors to the city and highlighting all that the city has to offer.

The J’s Hospice is thrilled that Beaulieu has offered their support as Headline Sponsor for the 2015 Marathon. Due to be launched this summer, Beaulieu is set to make a huge impact on Chelmsford, bringing new homes and community facilities, including  schools, shops, health and enhanced transport connections to the area. Residents at Beaulieu will have a range of amenities on their doorstep reducing the need for car travel with a network of footpaths and lots of open spaces to encourage healthy lifestyles – perfect for those who like to keep fit and active, and those training for a marathon!
