Heartfelt support

Sarah Smith is a member of Your Hospice Lottery in memory of her father Derrick Ashton Alford, Mayor of Salisbury in 1981, who sadly died in December 2011.

Derrick, a long supporter of Salisbury Hospice, received the MBE in recognition of his charitable work. His Mayoral Appeal in 1981 received considerable support from the community and raised around £26,000 for the Hospice. The Alford Room, a space at the Hospice where patients’ loved ones can reflect, was named in recognition of Mr and Mrs Alford’s work over the years.

Sarah continues her father’s support for the hospice and plays the lottery in support of Salisbury Hospice Charity.

'Overtime he fundraised, along with my mother, Vida, for the Hospice. I grew up knowing what it was to help others - family first - my grandparents all lived with us (we had a house in 2 flats) at one time or another.  Cousins, aunts all came to us when they needed a temporary home.

'I am so proud of all that Dad achieved - the Hospice, his MBE, Save the Children.  He worked tirelessly for anything he was involved in. To have a room named after him at the Hospice is a permanent reminder for us his family and all those he worked beside.'
