Giving something back

Helen N of Great Barr, Birmingham got the nicest surprise when she returned home from work one day to find a letter waiting for her from Your Hospice Lottery. Immediately, she thought, “Ooh I wonder if I've won something?” As she opened the envelope she was thinking – “I wonder if its £10 or maybe £25?” When she saw it was the top prize of £1,000, she was stunned!

Prior to her exciting win on the 6th April draw, the previous few days had been a bit of a struggle for Helen as 14th April marked the third anniversary of her husband's death. He was cared for at John Taylor Hospice.

Helen recalls, “There are no words to sufficiently describe just how wonderful the John Taylor Hospice team are. They not only cared for my husband but also provided counselling for both me and my daughter and helped us come to terms with our loss.

“I joined the Your Hospice Lottery as just a small a way of giving something back to them. Never did I think that my support would also result in such a fantastic win for me.”

Helen is still undecided how to spend her winnings but said she will definitely treat herself to something nice such as a new sewing cabinet to accommodate all her patchwork quilts.

Speaking about why she plays the lottery, Helen said, “It’s such a good way of helping to raise money for a hospice near to you. I like the fact that you can choose which hospice to support. I urge everyone to do it!

“My main reason for joining was to support John Taylor Hospice but I suppose at the back of mind I also thought, well, you never know someone has to win the big prize - and it could be me! I think the odds of winning are probably a lot better than other lotteries and you also know you are supporting a very deserving cause.”

Helen adds: “I am really pleased and proud to be a very small part of the fundraising effort. When I signed up, I did think - £1 a week - how can that really make a dent in the money hospices need to raise each year to keep going? But, when you realise that so far the lottery has raised £9 million for hospice care, then it underlines how important everyone's £1 a week is - because together we can make a difference.”
