A surprise windfall for St Helena supporter
Liz Goodall could not believe her eyes when she opened an envelope to see a cheque for £1,000 with her name on it!
She said: “I thought it was some sort of scam; a sad reaction but maybe indicative of the world we live in these days. When I read the letter accompanying the cheque I realised that I had won the Hospice Lottery, I was just absolutely thrilled and delighted.”
Liz would like to treat her family to a nice meal at a restaurant and will be making a donation back to St Helena.
Speaking of why she supports St Helena, Liz explains: “I don’t have any direct connections with St Helena Hospice but, along with many others, I have connections with people who are terminally ill or who have passed away following long battles with cancer; many of these have been fortunate enough to receive support from St Helena Hospice.
“My reasons for supporting link to my own experience of nursing my mother through cancer; this was a time when the kind of care and support offered by the Hospice was not available. It was a hard time, my mother died far too young and really deserved much better care and support; it was a different era.”
To anyone thinking of joining the lottery, Liz would urge other people to offer any support they can. She said: “The Hospice does some wonderful work, not just for the patients but for friends and families of the patients; not for one minute have I ever made my monthly payments to win money so this windfall has come as an incredible and delightful surprise.”
Your Hospice Lottery has raised over £9 million for hospice care and Liz is proud to even be a tiny part of this: “It just goes to show that every contribution, no matter how small, can support great things.”
