Arthur Rank Hospice Charity is delighted to announce that its 9th Star Shine Stroll, which took place on 14 May 2016, has reached an all-time high, raising an incredible total of £50,830 (as of 12/08/16). The figure takes the grand total raised by the event since its inaugural year in 2008 to £277,318.
The impressive amount, made up of entry fees, donations and sponsorship is an illustration of the generosity of those who took part in the 6.5 or 10 mile walk. 491 people registered for the event, with 453 crossing the start line at 7pm from Shelford Rugby Club and most taking around 3 hours to complete the their chosen route.
The walk has a special place in the heart of the Charity and those who take part, with many returning every year to celebrate the lives of those they love. With its ‘shine and sparkle’ theme, this year’s event was a dazzle to behold with fairy wings, pink feather boas and fluffy bunny ears, cowboy hats, star sprinkled pyjamas and a gold sequined jacket providing just some of the fancy dress highlights on the route which meandered in and out of Cambridge’s historic town centre at dusk. The route was a reverse of previous years and additionally wound past the front and back of Kings College.
Many acknowledged that it had been an emotional experience: “I would like to thank everyone who was not walking. It was a fabulous night. For me personally it was an emotional time after losing my Dad in October 2015. But you realise that so many other people are in the same position”.
Marketing and Events Officer, Tasha Auburn, adds: “We are so thrilled that this special event continues to grow year on year. The funds raised really reflects the passion of those who take part: it’s astounding that so many people have raised such impressive amounts with their sponsorship and we have been fortunate to receive some match funding from companies taking part this year too. It’s wonderful for our walkers to know that they are helping raise funds for those who need our care at present or in the future. We are already looking forward to next year and hope that we will welcome back many of the fabulous walkers who have taken part before and welcoming new people too!”
Arthur Rank Hospice Charity would like to thank each and every person who signed up and played a part in making 2016’s Star Shine Stroll such an unparalleled success, along with the generous volunteers who gave up their time to help on the evening. The Hospice would also like to extend their appreciation to Gibbs Denley Insurance Services who have sponsored the event since the start, Shelford Rugby Club for hosting and the Co-op on Mill Road who supported with the refreshments and all important bacon rolls!
