Encouraging long term unemployed to volunteer

People who are long term unemployed are being encouraged to sign up to St Helena Hospice’s Volunteer Skills Pathway scheme to develop their skills while supporting the hospice.

People who are long term unemployed are being encouraged to sign up to St Helena Hospice’s Volunteer Skills Pathway scheme to develop their skills while supporting the hospice.

The hospice is working with Colchester Job Centre and the Department of Work and Pensions with an aim to attract more people to volunteer at the hospice, which it is hoped will help rebuild the confidence of the long term unemployed and provide an opportunity for people to gain new skills or refresh existing ones.

Jacquie Pamphilon, Learning and Development Officer at St Helena Hospice, explains:

“St Helena Hospice has many roles that our incredible volunteers fill and we could not run without them, but we always need more in many different roles. By volunteering with us on our new Volunteer Skills Pathway scheme, we will provide the volunteer with a signed document that will indicate the skills they have gained or have been practising during their time with the hospice. People can take the document to any future job interviews which could then show a prospective employer their experience in the workplace over the last three to nine months.”

The volunteer team is holding an informal drop-in session about the scheme at the Jobcentre Plus, Chapel Street South, Colchester, Essex, CO2 7AZ, on 6th January between 10am to 3pm and welcome people to go along to find out how they can be involved.

For further information about the Volunteer Skills Pathway scheme contact St Helena Hospice’s volunteer team on email volunteer@sthelenahospice.org.uk or telephone 01206 931466.
