A team of Sutton Coldfield golfers have ‘putt’ in an incredible effort to support their local hospice.
The Ladies’ Team at Walmley Golf Club have presented John Taylor Hospice with a cheque for close to £11,000 – money raised through a year-long fundraising drive.
Each year the Lady Captain – who is in the role for 12 months – chooses a charitable cause close to their heart and organises a host of cash boosting activities and events.
Loretta Tambe (pictured top left), who was the Lady Captain until January 2018, said: “I chose John Taylor Hospice as our Charity of the Year because they’re based so close to our club and we wanted to give back to our local community. Many members have had family and friends cared for by the hospice and we wanted to support their fantastic work.”
The members teed off their fundraising efforts by holding a fashion show attended by over 100 guests. During the next 12 months they held bridge drives, a gala day, raffles, a fancy dress golf day and a Captain’s Charity Day featuring a shotgun start, Beat the Pro competition, dinner and an auction.
“We’ve really enjoyed it,” added Loretta, who lives in Sutton Coldfield with her husband and fellow club member Joe. “It has been lots of fun and we’ve had great laughs along the way! I’d like to thank all our wonderful lady members for their support as together we’ve had a very successful year of fundraising. I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved.”
Darren Dudley, Corporate Fundraising Manager at the hospice, said: “We’d like to express our gratitude to Loretta for nominating us as Charity of the Year and to all the club’s members for their time, generosity and enthusiasm.
The amount of money raised is an amazing achievement and will be used to support people who are living with a terminal illness and their families.
John Taylor Hospice is set to host its first Charity Golf Day this summer and when it came to choosing the venue Darren said Walmley was the obvious choice.
He explains: “We’ve both been a part of the local community for over 100 years and have formed such a strong partnership. The course and facilities at Walmley Golf Club are excellent and we always receive such a warm welcome. It’s the perfect venue to launch our new fundraising event.”
The Charity Golf Day will be held on Friday 6 July and tickets are priced at £300 for a team of four. Guests will be able to play 18 holes on the stunning course, receive refreshments on arrival and a two course meal upon returning to the clubhouse.
On the day there will also be the chance to pick up lots of prizes with an auction, raffle, putting challenge and Beat the Pro competition with PGA Pro Steve Carter.
