Sophie hosts charity ball to thank hospice staff

A charity ball organised by a first-time fundraiser has raised over £1,000 for John Taylor Hospice.

A charity ball organised by a first-time fundraiser has raised over £1,000 for John Taylor Hospice.

Sophie Carter hosted the Rose Ball in memory of her grandmother Christine Rose Howles and donated all funds raised to the Birmingham-based hospice that cared for her.

“My nan was such a wonderful person – the heart and soul of our family,” said Sophie, aged 20. “She was generous, kind and caring with a brilliant sense of humour and was always making us laugh! I am proud to call her my nan.”

Christine, originally from Erdington, was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2014 and underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments. Following hospital treatment for an infection in November 2015, Christine was referred to John Taylor Hospice.

To help with pain management, Christine spent time in respite care in the hospice’s In-Patient Unit. Her wish was to spend that Christmas at home – a wish that she fulfilled thanks to hospice staff and her “fighting-spirit”.

Christine returned to the hospice in early January where she died on 17 January 2016 at the age of 71, surrounded by friends and family.

Inspired by the hospice care provided for her grandmother, Sophie wanted to do something to make a difference. That’s when she came up with the idea to hold a fundraising ball.

Held at the Ramada Hotel in Sutton Coldfield, guests at the black tie event enjoyed a three-course meal and entertainment. Thanks to the support and generosity shown by the hotel and local businesses there was a raffle and auction with some great prizes donated to help boost fundraising efforts.

“It was my way to give a little something back to the hospice and to say thank you,” added Sophie.

“John Taylor Hospice staff made my nan feel special and valued – she adored them. They supported me and my family too. We could visit at any time and the staff reassured us and made us feel less scared. It was like a home from home.”
