Why Volunteer?

Volunteer at the Hospice – When I retired I felt that I ought to be finding something worthwhile to do and I spotted an event on Facebook – Bedford Daycare Hospice were hosting a jumble sale so I offered to help as a one-off! When the Events Manager found out that I had ‘spare time’ I was invited to come and see the Hospice. My concern was that I had no skills to offer, the Hospice offer Reiki, Aromatherapy, and Massage to patients. Fortunately there was a vacancy in the Butterfly Boutique, the nearly new shop in the Hospice garden. Believe me, it was like putting a girl in a sweet shop! it is a little gem of a shop full of nearly new clothing and bric-a-brac.

I work with Gabi on a Thursday and we have such a rapport, we beaver away unpacking, steaming and pricing. We really do have the greatest fun working together. Our customers have become friends and feel that they can just pop in for a browse. Often patients come in and never fail to be tempted – they are always so generous.

Fundraising events are always great fun and it is a good time to catch up with the many volunteers who keep the ‘buzz’ in the Hospice. My standard saying is that I will always eat for charity but behind this is supporting an amazing team of people who bring huge support to the community of Bedford.

Volunteering has so many benefits, it gives you a purpose, helps you meet new people and really makes you feel like you are making a difference to people who are struggling at a very difficult time of their lives.

Why not give it a go? We are always looking for volunteers at Bedford Daycare – phone us up, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain!

Volunteer at the Hospice –

Whether you’re a patient, a volunteer, a visitor, a therapist, a member of staff….no matter who opens the door to greet you when you enter into this haven, there will be a smile and a cheery hello to welcome you.

Bedford Daycare Hospice has an amazing calming effect on those lucky enough to visit regularly. The knowledgeable staff put patients at ease within moments and as a volunteer I can see the relief on their faces when they arrive somewhere they know will be safe and secure for the short time they will spend there. And for everyone, security and privacy is paramount and the key for patients who may be feeling vulnerable during a difficult and scary time in their life.

As a volunteer, when I’m there I can physically see the pleasure each one of our patients feel. There is laughter and jollity, along with quite a lot of silliness which has a ripple effect, making everyone relaxed and comfortable in each other’s company, and helps to build a bond within the shortest time. There are also serious discussions, putting patients minds at ease about events they have little control over, and the all-important privacy which remains secure and private, safe within the four walls of the Hospice.

As a volunteer, I treasure the many, many years I’ve had the fortune to have spent behind those doors.

Q…..Why do I continue to volunteer?
A……..All of the above.
