Brian Sawers of Leigh-on-Sea was overjoyed to receive an early Christmas present when a winning cheque for £1,000 from Your Hospice Lottery arrived on his doorstep on Christmas Eve!
Brian commented: “I was very surprised and shocked, I had to look at it two or three times before it sunk in! I had not had much work before then so it was very nice timing!”
Brian plays Your Hospice Lottery in support of The J’s Hospice and is their very first top prize winner! Mr Sawers was extremely lucky, only having been in the draw for six months.
He adds: “I received a knock at the door from a fundraiser talking about the lottery. I did not know specifically about the J’s Lottery but I knew other hospices were doing it. After speaking to the canvasser on the door I thought yes, I’ll do it but I didn’t do it because it’s a lottery, I just wanted to do something to support the J’s.”
Talking about how he has spent his winnings, Brian said: “I have donated some to another charity, I thought as the winnings came from a charity I couldn’t just spend it on myself! The first charity is Combat Stress, I already make donations to them and they are quite close to my heart. I will also leave some money for the Homeless Shelter – as an employee of the London Underground I come across them all the time. It has also been helpful catching up with bills and I will save what is left for a little treat.”
Mr Sawers joined Your Hospice Lottery as a way of supporting The J’s Hospice charity and would encourage other people to join too: “I feel very lucky to have won, it was not really my intention to win but it’s a great way to support the hospice because at least there is that prize element and you won’t win anything if you don’t join! At least you know your £1 a week is going to a worthwhile cause.”
