At Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice in Middlesbrough, they are honoured to care for children like Aj — a little boy whose strength and determination inspire them every day.
Aj was diagnosed with Propionic Acidemia, a rare and life-threatening metabolic disorder, just one week after birth. For his family, the diagnosis was overwhelming — few healthcare professionals had even heard of the condition, and the road ahead was uncertain.
In his first year, Aj faced immense challenges. He was placed in an induced coma at just four weeks old due to dangerously high ammonia levels. Before his first birthday, he suffered a metabolic stroke that left him unable to sit unaided, use the right side of his body, or eat and drink without medical support. He was fed via a nasogastric (NG) tube, and his family watched helplessly as he battled through each day.
Aj’s progress since joining Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice has been remarkable. With the help of his family and a dedicated care team, he can now sit up unaided, has started eating again, and recently began drinking small amounts. Every milestone is a testament to his resilience and the care he receives.
Zoe’s Place has become a lifeline for Aj’s family. Their specialist team has taken the time to understand his condition and routine, giving his parents peace of mind and the chance to rest. Aj follows a strict schedule, and knowing he’s in safe hands with professionals who truly care has made a world of difference.
Socialising with other children, engaging in activities, and simply having the chance to play has brought out the best in Aj. He’s happier, more confident, and thriving in ways that once felt out of reach.
Zoe’s Place provides expert care, emotional support, and joyful experiences for children with complex needs — and this is only possible thanks to people like you.
