Julie Warmington spent her 46th birthday at St Helena Hospice, where she was staying to manage the symptoms of stage 4 stomach cancer. Just a week later, surrounded by her loved ones, Julie passed away peacefully, a testament to the care and support she received in her final days.
During her stay, Julie courageously shared her experience on ITV Anglia news and later appeared on the front page of the Daily Gazette, backing St Helena Hospice’s urgent call for better Government funding to support vital hospice care.
Reflecting on her time at the hospice, Julie said:
“When I was first told I might need to come into the Hospice, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I was naturally worried. But from the moment I arrived, those fears disappeared. It’s such a beautiful place, so well run, and filled with the most wonderful, caring staff.
The support here has meant everything to me. Not just the medical care, but the kindness — emotional and practical — that the team offers every single day. I’ve felt safe, comfortable, and truly cared for.
The nurses go above and beyond. I have long hair and, with my strength so limited, I can’t manage even simple things like washing it. But the team has taken the time — sometimes up to an hour — to help me shower properly. That kind of care would be impossible anywhere else.
Knowing that the nurses are always just a call button away brings such reassurance. Their kindness is real and heartfelt, and it reflects the outstanding management and culture of the Hospice.
I feel humbled that I could come here so quickly when everything felt overwhelming. St Helena Hospice has my vote, 100%.
